Form-hugging fits had been on their way out for a while but 2019 was the year that really finished them off. From baggy denim to Chandler Bing-approved oversized tailoring, loose cuts crept from the fringes of the fashion and into mainstream menswear, marking a sartorial shift that continued long into the year 2020 till now, especially with the pandemic. It was a breath of fresh air for the wardrobes as spray-on legwear disappeared almost entirely – replaced instead by straight-leg, relaxed and wide-leg fits – and boxy ’90s-inspired outerwear reigned supreme. What is it like?

Longer lengths, wider cuts, and generally bigger proportions traverse all types of garments: Shirts appear longer, sweaters bigger and slouchier, cropped pants boxier, and even blazers cut as if they’re specifically for a mid-‘80s David Byrne. Even accessories aren’t immune, with beanies offering more space and fanny packs creeping into cross-body bag territory.

Too oversized can’t be too good

Many large men dress in clothes that are several sizes too big, thinking they are disguising their physique. But baggy clothes don’t fool anyone and in fact, draw more attention to your weight while downgrading your overall appearance and the impression you make. Keep a lookout for words like “oversized” or “relaxed” when shopping for a baggier tee. Getting a slim-fit shirt in a few sizes too big will leave you with something long and narrow, which has a high-risk potential for appearing dress-like. You want to go for something wider in the body and loose in the sleeves.
